Safe Entry and Exit Techniques in Rough Water

Diving in rough water can turn a fun day into a risky one if you don’t know what you’re doing. From unpredictable waves to slippery surfaces, there’s a lot that can go wrong—unless you’re prepared. Whether you're diving off a boat or from the shore, your entry and exit are critical moments that deserve just as much planning as the dive itself.

Before You Get In: Read the Conditions
Before suiting up, take a few minutes to observe the water. Watch how the waves break, look for rip currents, and identify your safest entry and exit points. If you're on a boat, listen to the crew’s safety briefing. If you’re shore diving, scan the beach or rocks for slippery algae, surge zones, or hidden drop-offs.

Controlled Entries from Shore
Wading into surf is no joke. Put your fins on at the water’s edge if it’s safe, or carry them and use a buddy for support until you’re deep enough to float. Walk sideways or backward into the water to keep your balance. Times like this are when teamwork matters most—have one diver help steady the other, then switch. Avoid turning your back to the waves, and once you’re buoyant, kick out beyond the surf zone before descending.

Boat Entries in Chop
Boat rocking like crazy? Don’t jump in blindly. Wait for the crew to give the all-clear, and hold onto a stable handrail or line until you're ready to enter. A giant stride entry usually works best in chop, but don’t hesitate to switch to a seated roll if the platform is too unstable. Once in the water, move quickly but calmly to the descent line. Rough water can scatter a group fast, so stay alert and descend as a team.

Exiting Through Surf or Onto a Boat
Exiting through waves is all about timing and confidence. Watch for a lull in the surf and move quickly while staying low. Take off your fins only when you're stable and can safely walk out—or use your buddy for balance. From a boat, wait for a stable moment before climbing the ladder. Keep one hand on a grip line or rope, and never remove your gear in open water unless instructed.

Rough water demands respect. It’s not the time to show off or rush. By planning your entry and exit just as carefully as your dive, you’ll keep the focus on exploration—not recovery.
