SAFETY WHILE DIVING

Lost Buddy Procedure: What to Do and When to Surface
It’s a scenario no diver wants to face, yet it happens: you turn to signal your buddy, and they’re gone. Buddy separation is one of the most common dive safety incidents—often caused by low visibility, distraction, or strong currents—and every diver should be prepared for it.
The key is to act quickly, calmly, and in a way that maximizes the chance of a safe reunion.
Step 1: Stop, think, and breathe
Don’t panic. Make a slow 360-degree turn while staying in place and scanning your surroundings. Look up, down, and behind, as divers sometimes drift vertically or get blocked by terrain. Keep your breathing slow and controlled—it helps conserve air and mental clarity.
Step 2: Search for no more than one minute
Most training agencies advise searching for a maximum of 60 seconds. This is sometimes referred to as “the rule of halves”—spend half of that time checking around you calmly without swimming far, so you don’t also become lost.
Step 3: Begin a slow, safe ascent
If your buddy doesn’t appear, begin a controlled ascent to the surface, making your safety stop if required and conditions allow. Your buddy should be doing the same. Upon reaching the surface, look for bubbles, signal the boat or shore crew, and keep scanning.
Step 4: Prevent future separation
Buddy separation often comes down to poor communication or loose planning. Set clear roles and expectations pre-dive: who’s leading, who’s monitoring depth and time, and what to do if separated. Maintain visual or physical contact regularly—especially in poor visibility.
Gear tip: Consider using a surface marker buoy (SMB)
Carrying an SMB can help both you and your buddy spot each other at the surface if separated. It’s a small addition to your kit that makes a big difference in emergencies.
Losing a buddy can shake your confidence, but if you follow protocol, stay calm, and trust your training, the situation is very manageable. It’s also a reminder of how important the buddy system truly is.
