SAFETY WHILE DIVING
How to Properly Maintain Your Dive Computer
Your dive computer tracks depth, time, ascent rate, and no-decompression limits—all while logging each moment of your underwater adventure. But just like any piece of scuba gear, it needs regular care to keep functioning accurately and safely. Here’s how to make sure your dive computer stays in peak condition, dive after dive.
1. Rinse thoroughly after every dive
Saltwater and chlorine are your computer’s worst enemies. After every dive, rinse your device in fresh, lukewarm water. Gently press its buttons underwater to prevent salt buildup beneath them. Avoid soaking it in hot water, as heat can damage internal components and seals.
2. Dry it carefully
After rinsing, let your computer air dry completely before storing it. Avoid drying with towels that might leave lint in the buttons or charging port. If your device has a pressure sensor or charging contact pins, gently wipe them with a clean microfiber cloth.
3. Store it in a safe, dry place
Keep your dive computer away from direct sunlight and high humidity. Store it in a padded case or gear bag, especially if traveling. Never leave it in a hot car or damp area for extended periods—temperature extremes and moisture can degrade the battery and internal seals.
4. Keep an eye on battery life
Most dive computers either use replaceable coin cell batteries or have built-in rechargeable batteries. If yours is user-replaceable, only use the manufacturer-recommended battery type and follow instructions carefully to avoid leaks. For rechargeable models, charge regularly—but don’t leave them plugged in continuously.
5. Update firmware when available
Some dive computers have updatable software that improves functionality or fixes bugs. Check your manufacturer’s website or app for firmware updates. Keeping your device up-to-date ensures peak performance and compatibility with logbook apps or desktop software.
6. Service as recommended
Although dive computers don’t require servicing as often as regulators, some manufacturers recommend inspection every few years—especially for models with depth sensors, wireless transmitters, or integrated air systems. If your display malfunctions, logs seem inaccurate, or the unit won’t hold a charge, get it checked by an authorized technician.
7. Don’t forget the log software
Using your dive computer’s companion app or desktop program not only helps you track your dives but also flags unusual data or early signs of malfunction. Upload your dives regularly and back up the data—your dive history is valuable!
Taking care of your dive computer is simple, but skipping these steps can lead to costly repairs or data loss. With just a few habits, you’ll keep this critical tool reliable, readable, and ready for every underwater adventure.
