How Divers Can Influence Ocean Policy
Discover how divers can strengthen ocean policy through citizen science, advocacy, and conservation actions—and make a real impact on marine protection.
PRESERVING OUR GREAT LAKES AND OCEANS
How Divers Can Influence Ocean Policy
As divers, we have a unique window into the ocean’s changing health—coral bleaching, debris, and declining fish populations. This firsthand experience not only inspires but also equips us to shape policy and conservation in meaningful ways.
Collect Data That Drives Change
Take part in citizen science programs like PADI AWARE’s Dive Against Debris—the world’s largest underwater cleanup survey. Divers log debris data that informs legislation and local cleanup priorities — for example, Vanuatu banned single-use plastic bags after evidence from this program revealed the scale of the problem. Another example is Reef Life Survey, where volunteers have collected critical biodiversity data from over 2,400 sites in 44 countries to guide marine protected area (MPA) planning.
Ground Policy in Lived Experience
In Colombia, the diver collective Guardianes del Mar rescues marine animals from ghost nets and gathers data to support environmental decisions. Their work has even helped halt development projects like a harmful deep-water port by showcasing their community-driven stewardship.
Join and Promote Established Programs
Dive operators can be powerful allies in conservation policy. Programs like PADI Eco Centers, certified through PADI and Green Fins, support marine protections and sustainable tourism practices. Resorts like Red Sea Diving Safari onboard divers in conservation work while building support for marine governance.
Lead With Your Voice
Beyond collecting data, divers can use their unique perspective to advocate for change. Speak up at public forums, participate in consultations, or share evidence and stories with your local representatives. Our observations—from shifting fish behavior to water quality—bring ocean policies to life.
From gathering evidence underwater to standing up for protection laws, divers hold the tools to make ocean advocacy deeply personal and profoundly effective.
