Formed when sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) from vehicles, factories, and power plants mix with moisture in the air, acid rain falls into lakes, rivers, and quarries, altering water chemistry in ways that can threaten aquatic life.
One striking example is the clear-water quarry lakes popular with freshwater divers in the Midwest. Over time, increased acidity from acid rain has lowered pH levels, causing stress to fish species such as bass and bluegill and killing off some sensitive aquatic plants. As vegetation disappears, sediment stays suspended in the water longer, reducing the crystal-clear visibility divers expect.
The chemical changes don’t stop there. Acidic water can leach aluminum and other metals from surrounding soils, which are toxic to fish and invertebrates. This toxicity can lead to smaller fish populations and disrupt breeding cycles, further altering the underwater landscape.
